Young people and schools in the news
Headlines in America foster a crises mentality about our youth and schools.
This makes the public fear for the future. Successes often go unnoticed.
The scientists and practitioners at PAXIS know that millions of young people and
thousands of schools are achieving, acting peaceful, making healthy choices and
experiencing wellbeing everyday. These successes are the result of best practices, and
those best practices need to be more widely shared.
The PAXIS School Climate System makes best practices easy for every school to use.
The PAXIS School Climate system makes those best practices available to many mores
students world-wide.
School Achievement
Low-test scores are a major concern everywhere.
Headlines decry low-test scores, loss of competitive talents against other
countries, and the shortage of teachers. Schools and families often spend tons of money
for scientifically untested interventions. Teachers feel beat up by news stories ranking
their schools by test scores, and they feel helpless to make change.
Years of scientific studies show promising solutions for increasing student
achievement.
At PAXIS, we have watched worry about academic competencies with some dismay. We
know there were reams of very practical scientific studies of procedures, tools and
methods that increase academic scores. The studies are well supported by experienced
practitioners. Yet, we can see that many people seem to be unaware of these studies. Some
of the tools and procedures involved nothing costly; many used items already in everyday
use at schools but people either aren't using them or are using them improperly.
Why are these tools not in broader use?
The answer is rather simple. Only other scientists read scientific journals, and
the journals are available only from interlibrary loan from major research universities.
Books written by such scientists are likewise not commonly found on the shelves of the
local bookstore.
PAXIS makes effective academic achievement tools available to educational settings.
Over time, PAXIS has learned how to comb and synthesize the scientific literature
in ways that practitioners can use. We are constantly developing algorithms for searching
and synthesizing knowledge. Some products of our searching and synthesizing are the PAXIS School Climate System, PAXIS Leaders Are
Readers and PAXIS BrainBuilders/ BrainCoolers, which continue to grow as new discoveries
come to our attention from our staff, from other researchers, and from practitioners.
Simple to use PAXIS approved tools can boost math and language achievement by
15%-25%. Research results have been replicated and published in peer-reviewed scientific
journals -- one of the gold standards of scientists. The results show we can quite
easily boost academic achievement in math and language by 15% to 25% in a short time, with
lasting effects. These tools are in the PAXIS
School Climate System.
The PAXIS School Climate System links to a Community-Wide approach for schools, homes
and other settings.
The PAXIS School System "docks" with all of the other PAXIS systems, and
schools can expect increased community involvement, and "lessons" learned at
school generalize easily to home and community.
PAXIS School Systems bring schools a plethora of well-proven ideas for behavior
management (The Self-Control System that is embedded in the BrainBuilders and Brain
Coolers Toolbox), incentives and recognition (The Leadership Toolbox) and enhancing school
climate, (The PAXISphere "Structure" System). Included are teaching tips, lesson
plans, games, customizable forms, reproducible art and forms, teaching stories, evaluation
tools, and linked home and community materials.
PAXIS School System Vision Experience, wisdom, and science tell us that the
climate of a school changes the future. An effective, powerful, hopeful, engaging and
positive school climate changes the brains and behavior of our children for the better.
PAXIS School Systems make scientific, experience and wisdom everyday best practice. What
do you see, hear, feel and think as a consequence of those best practices? A visit to a
successful site and scientific data tell the story: Smiles, laughter, and engagement in
learning and school activities by children and adults. Self-control, inhibition of
aggression, increased attention, and greater follow-through on academic tasks. Young
people and adults throughout the community working together toward a shared vision.
School, home and community united in shared language, common understanding and tools of
action for positive outcomes. More resources devoted to the "critical mission"
functions of schools, instead of diverted to secondary functions of schools such as social
services, risk management, or loss control. Fewer acts of negative behavior that burden
morale, resources and future of students, families, staff and the community; reduced
crime, substance abuse, and failure. Better physical and mental health among students and
adults. Greater achievement, attendance, and completion of school.
